What is Strength? | Rainforest Alliance

The Appalachian Mountains are one of the most biodiverse spots in North America.

Scientists have documented more than 15,000 species found nowhere else in the world. This region is also home to people and economies that have long been tied to the boom-bust cycle of coal mining. Since 2015, we've been working with the Appalachian Woodlands Alliance to strengthen sustainable forest management in the Appalachians—finding a balance between biodiversity conservation and healthy local economies that will last as long as a forest.

The Appalachian Woodlands Alliance is a partnership between the Rainforest Alliance, the US Forest Service, and several leading forest product companies, including Avery Dennison, Columbia Forest Products, Domtar, Evergreen Packaging, Kimberly-Clark, and Staples. Working with private landowners, this group aims to improve the productivity and health of forests in the southeastern US by fostering sustainable practices.
